Discrimination & Reading Habit!

Filed under: Mishmash — A Noisy Indian Woman @ 5:15 pm

When we hear the words “reading habit” most of them disengage themselves thinking that it is something they don’t have. This is because often “reading” has been connected to non-fiction that has won numerous awards or thick novels written by famous authors.

To speak truthfully, each one of us have a separate interest. Even at school, we might have hated English but loved reading Physics. While some may love comics, some love history. Some love novels and some love theories. Some love art and some are happy reading glossy film magazines. Weighing comics down in the scale saying it is for children might stop comic lovers from reading anything at all. Even after trying so many genres one might still stick to romantic novels alone. Just because certain books are considered top in literary value, and those that I read are not in that list doesn’t mean I don’t read. It only means I read what I like.

I have often wondered who decided that only if someone reads books  exceeding 500 pages he/she can be termed an avid reader! So if I read 5-6 newspapers everyday, am I not qualified to be called a book lover? Or what if I read just 10 pages everyday but never go without reading those 10 pages in a day?

Pressure to read what is IN has lead to people withdraw into their shells and stop reading. That is why even a child which hasn’t read J.K.Rowling is forced to say in an animated voice “Oh! I Love Harry Potter!”.  So people…don’t let this infection found in many people catch you! Read what you love- 2 page short story, comics or 1000 page non-fiction. If you love it, then just read it! After all it is for YOUR satisfaction that you read and not to satisfy others’ expectations… Let yourself discover what you love to read. HAPPY READING! 😀
